With the January transfer window two months away and the fixture schedule piling up, Kaizer Chiefs’ sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Jr has opened on the prospect of his side adding reinforcements in the January transfer window.
Chiefs were paired alongside Zamalek SC, Al Masry, and ZESCO United in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages on Monday, adding to an already packed fixture schedule for the Soweto giants.
The obligation to balance continental and domestic commitments has increased given the club’s participation in the Betway Premiership, the forthcoming Nedbank Cup and the Confederation Cup, coupled with the fan’s expectations.
“I think that talks to sort of why we recruited some of the players we did this year. We’re not normally a team that has the size of squad that we have. I think it’s very calculated, it’s one of the reasons why logistics, travelling, potential of injuries, form dipping, different competitions to play,” said Motaung Jr.
This is Chiefs’ first foray into African club competition since 2021, with the Soweto giants looking to reassert themselves as a force to be reckoned with, at least from a southern African perspective.
“I think we can prepare as best we can, the squad size, the squad’s quality, also our sports science and medical department at this moment in time is going to play a crucial role,” added the 44-year-old.
As it stands, the Glamour Boys have 36 players on their books heading into the January transfer window, with the potential of assessing their options and potentially beefing up the squad.
“We’re always looking to beef up, but you also have to manage the chemistry within the group in the team, the level of understanding and introducing the players that we already have signed. So, I think it’s a case of, we’ll evaluate and see where we are come the transfer window. There are many players right now who are just being integrated into the team, others still to get their chance, so it’s about getting the cohesion right as opposed to using every single transfer window to get players in,” added the former Chiefs striker.
Given the dynamics within the team this season after parting ways with Tunisian tactician, Nasreddine Nabi, those of Chiefs persuasion will be quietly pleased with how this season is currently playing out for the side who made it into the top half of the log standings last campaign.
