Chippa United head coach Luc Eymael has confirmed two key appointments to his technical staff: Selaotse “Sly” Mosala as his assistant coach and Walid Ben Othman as the new goalkeeper coach.
Eymael noted that Mosala’s arrival was no surprise, as the two have a history of success. They previously worked together at Polokwane City and, most notably, led Free State Stars to the 2017/18 Nedbank Cup title.
Mosala was on the bench for Chippa United’s recent 2-1 victory over Orbit College at Buffalo City Park Stadium on Tuesday.
This win was the team’s first of the season. Goals from Xolani Sithole and Justice Figuareido secured the win for the Chilli Boyz, while Orbit College’s Siyabulela Mabele scored a consolation goal in the 90th minute.
The victory saw the Chilli Boyz, who have already had three coaches this season, move up to 14th place in the league standings with four points after six matches.
Eymael also confirmed the appointment of Walid Ben Othman from Tunisia as the new goalkeeper coach. Othman, who was in the stands for the recent match, previously worked with Eymael at Lupopo, where they won 27 matches, kept 26 clean sheets, and scored 55 goals.
“We have a new goalkeeper coach that was working with me in Libya, working with me in Tunisia, working with me in Congo,” Eymael said.
“We qualified Eloi Lupopo for the CAF Champions League, and we had the cleanest sheets of the league. We beat TP Mazembe twice and drew with them once.”
He emphasized the importance of a strong “spine” for the team, saying, “The most important thing is to stabilize the spine and after that you can stabilize the other things. I think everyone is bringing confidence and technical abilities to the players.”
Sean Low, who has been with the club for many seasons, will remain as the goalkeeper coach while Ben Othman awaits his work permit.
Looking ahead, Chippa United will face Eymael’s former club, Polokwane, at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.
Eymael expressed a focus on taking “one game at a time,” adding, “We have to take lessons from the past to be better in the present and perhaps achieve something in the future.”
