Colossal Loss: South Africa Sets Record for Lowest T20I Score Against India

India hands South Africa devastating 101-run defeat in T20I opener

The first T20 international at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack saw South Africa suffering a humiliating defeat against India, losing by 101 runs. This match marks the beginning of a five-game series, with India now leading 1-0. Hardik Pandya returned to the squad after an injury layoff, taking center stage.

Aiden Markram, winning the toss, opted to bowl first, anticipating dew later in the game. The Proteas welcomed back veteran David Miller and Anrich Nortje, both key players who had been absent due to injuries.

South Africa's selection appeared to lean heavily on bowling capabilities, with Keshav Maharaj slated to bat as low as number 8.

Shubman Gill's return from injury was short-lived, as he was dismissed for just four runs, caught off the bowling of Lungi Ngidi. Ngidi continued to shine, taking the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, leaving India struggling at 17/2.

Marco Jansen's remarkable fielding was highlighted by his catch to dismiss Abishek Sharma for 17. When he took his third catch of the innings, it culminated in Ngidi's third wicket, dismissing Tilak Virma and leaving India precariously placed at 78/4.

However, Hardik Pandya's explosive batting turned the tide for India. Coming in after a lengthy absence, he quickly made an impact by scoring 59 runs off 28 balls, helping India post a competitive total of 175/6 despite an early struggle.

In a stark contrast, South Africa's batting collapse resulted in a dismal total of 74, marking their lowest score ever in T20 internationals. The Proteas had a brief revival attempt led by Markram and Dewald Brevis, but the fall of wickets became rapid, with the last five batsmen contributing only six runs.

Jasprit Bumrah achieved a significant milestone by claiming his 100th T20I wicket, dismissing Brevis during South Africa's faltering innings.

As both teams experienced different outcomes in their respective returns, India looked to build on their momentum, while South Africa faced the harsh reality of their declining form, now losing 17 of their last 26 T20 matches. The next clash for the Proteas comes quickly with the second T20 international set for Thursday at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh.
