Stellenbosch Returns to Winning Form with Narrow Victory Over AS Otoho
Stellenbosch FC recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory against AS Otoho in their CAF Confederation Cup group-stage opener at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. This win marked a significant turnaround for Clive Barker’s side, who had been struggling with a three-game winless streak.
The match began with both teams eager to establish dominance, yet their aggressive approaches left the contest level during the initial exchanges. Stellenbosch's first notable attempt at goal arrived in the 20th minute when Muzomuhle Khanyi unleashed a shot from distance, but it was comfortably saved by Otoho's goalkeeper, Jodel Boulounguidi.
As the first half progressed without a breakthrough, both teams experienced moments of frustration in their hunt for the opening goal. Otoho seemed to finish the half stronger, achieving their first shot on target with a looping header that was easily gathered by goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
Just before halftime, Otoho nearly took the lead when Bandiougou Diallo's free-kick hit the woodwork, adding to the tension as both squads sought to capitalize.
The second half began with Otoho exhibiting similar attacking intent, as an Ibrahima Traore header just missed the target from a corner. However, both teams soon settled into a defensive struggle, creating few clear opportunities.
In a tactical change to shift the momentum, Barker brought on substitutes Thato Khiba, Sanele Barns, and Cupido in the 65th minute. This strategic alteration proved pivotal.
Stellenbosch came close to scoring in the 80th minute when Cupido attempted to chip the advancing Boulounguidi, only to see his effort saved. However, in a thrilling finish, the substitutes changed the game in stoppage time. In the 93rd minute, Cupido found the net after receiving an exquisite through-ball from Khiba, securing a dramatic late victory for Stellenbosch.
