Japanese video game developer Cygames has issued a statement addressing the backlash following its announcement to form an AI-focused subsidiary. The development stirred considerable discussion within the gaming community.
In a post on social media platform X, known for popular titles like Umamusume: Pretty Derby, the studio expressed regret for the 'concern' caused by the initial announcement, which they described as 'simplified' and lacking detail on ongoing debates surrounding generative AI.
Cygames reassured that no generative AI art is utilized in its games, emphasizing that all current projects are crafted through the dedicated efforts of its staff. The developer affirmed that it will not incorporate generative AI into its products without prior notice to its community.
In recognition of the gaming community—including creators and artists—Cygames expressed deep respect and a commitment to uphold free expression while aiming to deliver top-tier entertainment. They concluded with another apology to fans and supporters.
The conversation around AI continues to be a hot topic in the industry. Recently, Hazelight founder Josef Fares shared his perspective, stating he does not foresee AI 'taking over' and is open to its use, provided it is not generative. Meanwhile, other Japanese studios, including Square Enix and Sega, have shown interest in exploring AI technology.
Notably, Umamusume: Pretty Derby received the prestigious best mobile game award at last year’s The Game Awards.
