The Democratic Alliance (DA) is raising serious concerns about the African National Congress (ANC) and their approach to foreign policy, particularly in light of the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela. This operation has sparked accusations of double standards on the part of the ANC, as the DA contends that such inconsistency is damaging to South Africa's credibility on the global stage.

Double Standards in Foreign Policy

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the DA criticized the ANC following an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council where South Africa condemned the U.S. for what it termed a violation of international law. The operation resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, an event that has drawn sharp rebukes and highlighted the ANC’s contradictory diplomatic stances.

“The ANC has not taken a firm stance against Russia's invasion of Ukraine but is quick to condemn the U.S.,” said Ryan Smith, DA Member of Parliament and International Relations spokesperson.

A Gross Betrayal of Values

Smith accused the ANC of placing party interests above national principles, labeling their response a gross betrayal of the core values found within the South African Constitution. He further criticized the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) for its stance that military interventions only create instability, calling this view “diplomatic cowardice.”

“Inconsistency in our foreign policy undermines South Africa's credibility internationally,” he stated, as concerns mount regarding the political motivations behind DIRCO's actions.

Key Developments in the Venezuela Situation

  • U.S. President Donald Trump announced extensive military operations in Venezuela, which resulted in Maduro's capture.
  • The U.S. has declared an interim control over Venezuela, promising to establish a new leadership.
  • DIRCO has strongly condemned the military action taken by the U.S.
  • The South African government has guaranteed that all citizens in Venezuela are safe amidst the turmoil.
  • Delcy Rodríguez has been sworn in as the interim president of Venezuela.

EFF's Response to U.S. Actions

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have also publicly condemned the U.S. intervention. They label the event as a clear violation of international law and a breach of Venezuela’s sovereignty, echoing the concerns voiced by the DA.
