Ditto - known as the transform Pokémon - is one of the most elusive creatures in Pokémon Go, owing to its unique ability to disguise itself as other Pokémon.
In the main series of games, this purple blob can use the move Transform, allowing it to mimic both the appearance and moveset of other Pokémon, a mechanic that is also featured in Pokémon Go.
Since the Ditto disguises change frequently, it’s essential to know which creatures Ditto is currently mimicking, particularly if you are on the hunt for a shiny Ditto to enhance your collection.
What is Ditto? How to Catch It in Pokémon Go
Unlike any other Pokémon in the game, Ditto does not appear in its actual form when exploring the wild. Instead, Ditto takes the form of other Pokémon, revealing its true identity only upon capture.
When you catch a Pokémon that transforms into Ditto, your collection will update just like any other Pokémon, allowing you to upgrade it with Candy and take it into battles at Gyms.
Ditto is also obtainable by completing specific activities, such as the Research Breakthrough in September 2021 and through the Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto Special Research quest.
The Pinch Perfect event has introduced Klawf into Pokémon Go! Be sure to check the event and raid schedules for January.

How to Obtain Shiny Ditto in Pokémon Go
Shiny Ditto was initially released during the Pokémon Tour: Kanto event and was a reward for completing the associated Special Research quest, available only to event ticket holders.
It later became accessible to all players in the wild or through specific activities, such as Research Breakthroughs, at the start of September 2021.
There are two key rules for capturing a shiny Ditto:
Rule One: If a Pokémon that can be Ditto appears in shiny form, it will not change into Ditto when caught. This ensures players do not miss out on capturing the shiny version of that Pokémon, like shiny Diglett.
Rule Two: If you catch a Pokémon that transforms into Ditto upon capture, there is a chance it could be a shiny Ditto.
The strategy for catching shiny Ditto is to keep capturing non-shiny versions of the potential disguises until you get lucky!
Fortunately, the odds of finding a shiny Ditto are better than most Pokémon, estimated at around a 1 in 64 chance.
Additional Tips for Ditto in Pokémon Go
Here’s more information on Ditto:
- Ditto can appear in the wild for all players, and it is not a random transformation; if you catch it, others nearby may catch the same one too. Ditto can also appear due to Lures or Incense.
- According to community insights, Ditto can be taken into Gym battles, where it transforms into the opponent while keeping its CP. It's worth using Ditto strategically in battles, but against other Dittos, they will not transform and will only use Struggle.
- Ditto cannot participate in Trainer battles, including those in the Go Battle League, or against Team Leaders.
- Ditto is a Normal-type Pokémon with no evolutions. Its Pokedex entry states, "Ditto rearranges its cell structure to transform into other shapes, but occasionally gets details wrong."
- You can catch multiple Dittos, which makes sense, as they require specific Candy for power-ups.
- Ditto has a walking distance of 3 km as a Buddy Pokémon, similar to starters and the Abra evolution line.
Best of luck capturing Ditto in Pokémon Go!
