A dramatic scene unfolded in Gauteng as KwaZulu-Natal police confronted a suspected hitman linked to multiple cash-in-transit heists and targeted murders. The suspect, identified as a 49-year-old male from Ladysmith, met his end during a high-speed chase that culminated in a violent shootout.

The incident took place early on Wednesday morning, 7 January 2026, when police located the suspect's vehicle on a major route. Instead of complying with the stop signal, the suspect initiated a dangerous pursuit, which concluded when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

According to police reports, as the chase progressed, the suspect opened fire on the pursuing officers, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire. Despite the chaos, no officers were harmed, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered, adding to the evidence linking him to a series of violent crimes.

Authorities further suspect that this individual was involved in the attempted assassination of Dr. Dumisani Thabethe, a municipal official from Newcastle, who was shot just two days earlier on his way to work. Both Dr. Thabethe and his security detail received emergency medical treatment following the attack.

In a statement to the Newcastle Advertiser, journalist Zianne Leibrandt shared insights from anonymous police sources who detailed how the suspect was tracked using a combination of crime intelligence, canine units, and aerial support. His reckless flight across the freeway, where he reportedly ignored several red lights, lasted over 20 kilometers before culminating in the fateful shootout with police.

The grey Nissan he was driving and the firearm found at the scene form crucial parts of the ongoing investigation into the suspect's past crimes, particularly the assault on Dr. Thabethe.

This incident is not isolated, as KwaZulu-Natal police recently arrested a suspect in Phoenix after a separate vehicle chase that involved shots fired at law enforcement. Similarly, another operation saw police fatally shoot a suspect believed to be linked to various cash-in-transit robberies and attacks. These ongoing investigations shed light on the heightened risks and complexities faced by law enforcement in combating violent crime in the region.

As authorities continue to piece together the suspect's connections and prior offenses, the community remains vigilant, aware of the persistent threat posed by organized crime in KwaZulu-Natal.
