The eThekwini Municipality reported a R80 million GDP impact from Bafana Bafana's match against Zimbabwe
The eThekwini Municipality has disclosed that the recent FIFA World Cup qualifying match between Bafana Bafana and Zimbabwe generated approximately R54 million in direct economic impact, contributing to a total GDP of around R80 million, along with the creation of about 245 job opportunities.
The event notably boosted local business activity across various sectors, including accommodation, restaurants, transport, and informal trading.
Attracting a sizable crowd, the match highlighted Durban's capability to effectively host significant international sporting events while also invigorating the local economy.
During their stay in Durban, the Zimbabwean national team incurred nearly R1 million on accommodation in Umhlanga from the previous Sunday until their departure for Polokwane on Saturday morning.
Additionally, Zimbabwe managed the expenses for Bafana Bafana’s two-day stay in the city, considering they were designated the visitors.
Despite the economic uplift from the sold-out match held at the iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup venue, Bafana Bafana fell short in securing a victory, leaving their qualification hopefuls hinging on other teams' performances.
To remain in contention, Bafana Bafana must hope that Nigeria defeats Group C leaders Benin and achieve a victory against Rwanda by two or more goals in their upcoming match at Mbombela Stadium.
The successful execution of the fixture enhances Moses Mabhida Stadium's reputation as a top-notch multi-purpose venue capable of hosting large-scale events while delivering a superb experience for attendees, as noted by the municipality.
Collaboration among law enforcement, stadium management, emergency services, and the transport sector provided for seamless event operations, minimized traffic disruptions, and ensured a safe environment before and after the match.
Currently undergoing refurbishment with over R200 million allocated for upgrades by international engineers, the Moses Mabhida Stadium has also hosted various Premier Soccer League fixtures and major cup finals since January 2025, contributing an estimated R320 million to the local economy through tourism, hospitality, and small business activity.
The municipality reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure that major sporting events not only promote sports tourism but also yield lasting social and economic benefits for local communities.
The City further appreciates all residents, visitors, and supporters who contributed to the success of the event by following regulations, utilizing public transport, and helping to keep Durban clean.
