The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, has made headlines with startling findings from the department's investigation into last year's matric exam paper leak.

In a revelation that has left many South Africans shocked, Gwarube disclosed that the exam papers were leaked by an employee from within the Department itself. This scandal first came to light in late December 2025, prompting swift investigation by the authorities.

On January 9, 2026, during a press briefing, Gwarube shared that both the employee responsible for the leak and another official linked to the incident were suspended. The National Investigative Task Team uncovered that the papers were leaked to the employee's son, who then distributed them to 40 students across eight schools in Tshwane.

How Did the Leak Occur?

Gwarube explained that the leak originated from the Department’s secure environment where national examination papers are crafted, processed, and safeguarded. The integrity of these exams is now in question, as the results for the involved learners have been withheld pending further investigations. Each student will face disciplinary proceedings, and the outcomes will ultimately be decided by Umamlusi.

What Papers Were Affected?

According to the investigation, seven exam papers were compromised, including critical subjects like English Home Languages and Mathematics, as well as Physical Sciences, which are essential for matriculants.

Public Outcry for Justice

The lack of immediate criminal charges has stirred outrage online, with many citizens expressing their frustration at the government's response. Comments flooded social media, with users demanding more decisive action.

Knowledge remarked, "Put them on special leave while you’re organising the Commission of Inquiry."
Another user, Christo Wolf Peter, sarcastically added, "And I guess the employee made a couple of bucks as well."
While Mxolisi Frank Mathaba commented, "Kinda pointless investigation if you ask me. The result was obvious."
Best of Sports jadedly stated, "And we know that the employee won't get fired or charged or anything."
Siya Mazizi simply questioned, "Any arrests to spare?"

Students Discuss Rewriting the Exams

The burgeoning controversy has spurred discussions among matriculants about potentially having to rewrite the exams. One content creator proposed a date for a makeup exam, suggesting,

"Let them rewrite on the 16th. All of them. We want to groove in peace. These kids are all over taverns and clubs."

As the investigation continues, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on how this scandal will unfold and what repercussions will follow for those involved.
