The latest Nielsen ratings indicate a significant decline in viewership for Fallout Season 2 in comparison to its predecessor. The data reveals an eye-opening reason behind this drop.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the viewership clocked in at 794 million minutes on Prime Video for the week of December 15-21, coinciding with the debut of Season 2 on December 16. In contrast, Season 1 amassed a staggering 2.9 billion minutes during its launch week in April 2024. This represents a steep drop of 72%, largely attributed to the differing release formats of the two seasons.
Season 1 was made available in a binge format, enabling viewers to consume all episodes instantly. Conversely, Season 2 is opting for a weekly release schedule, with only one episode dropping on December 16, unlike the two to three episodes often released for other Prime Video shows.
These factors contribute to the remarkable disparity in viewership numbers between the two seasons.
Nielsen's data indicates that 54% of the streaming minutes were attributed to Season 2 during the December 15-21 week, totaling approximately 429 million minutes, while the remaining minutes were garnered from Season 1's audience.
As of now, Fallout Season 2 has aired its fifth episode, with three more episodes set to release weekly until the season finale on February 4. A third season is on the horizon as well and may commence filming sooner than anticipated.
Additionally, Bethesda is rumored to be developing remakes of both Fallout 3 and New Vegas, alongside a brand-new title, Fallout 5.
