Fatal Fury Trailer Sparks AI Controversy Among Fans Over Strange Details

The use of generative AI in video games has been a contentious topic, particularly with respect to artistic integrity. Recent scrutiny has fallen upon the upcoming fighting title, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, after the release of a new trailer showcasing the upcoming second season of DLC characters.

Fans and reviewers have dissected the trailer, raising concerns over inconsistent character designs, and suspecting the inclusion of generative AI in the visuals. A notable concern highlighted in the trailer is a fleeting glimpse of series antagonist Geese Howard, which appears to depict him missing an entire foot.

Additional discrepancies include Blue Mary's motorcycle, which seems to lack essential components and is portrayed as an entirely different model than what she typically rides. Furthermore, Kim Jae Hoon is shown with varying wardrobes between his cinematic and gameplay appearances. Attempts to obtain clarification from the developer, SNK, are ongoing.

If Fatal Fury's trailer does incorporate generative AI, it follows a trend where several other titles have faced similar scrutiny. For instance, Activision recently acknowledged the use of AI in developing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, though they maintained that human creativity remains at the forefront. Additionally, fans suspect that Battlefield 6 utilized AI-generated art, and the Indie Game Awards annulled honors for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 after it was revealed that AI-generated assets were used in its development.

Moreover, Larian Studios, the creators behind Baldur's Gate 3, also faced backlash when it was discovered that they experimented with AI tools for concept art. In response to the criticism, CEO Swen Vincke has stated that the studio will refrain from using generative AI for concept art in their forthcoming title, Divinity.
