DURBANVILLE, WESTERN CAPE - In a dramatic crackdown, five Malawian nationals found themselves in custody after the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police uncovered an illegal gin factory operating out of a residential property. An astonishing 2,000 litres of homemade gin were confiscated in the operation, drawing attention to the concerning issue of counterfeit alcohol consumption.
Authorities Take Action
On January 5, 2026, a tip-off from vigilant community members prompted authorities to investigate suspicious activities at the property. Responding swiftly, safety officers obtained permission to search the premises, leading to the discovery of 11 large drums filled with illicit gin and equipment typically used in the distillation process.
Among the findings were empty bottles from established alcohol brands, suggesting associates intended to relabel the homemade liquor for sale under recognisable names. The group of five, ranging in age from 18 to 39, has been charged with producing alcohol unlawfully and violating the Counterfeit Goods Act.
Potential Dangers of Counterfeit Alcohol
The investigation has since been taken over by the Durbanville police, who confirmed the arrest of the property owner, a Chinese national. All arrested individuals are set to appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on January 7, 2026. Authorities have also stated that the seized alcohol will undergo laboratory testing to determine its contents.
"Counterfeit alcohol poses severe health risks, often containing toxic substances that can lead to serious health complications or even death,"
warned JP Smith, the City of Cape Town's Mayco member for Safety and Security. He commended the Neighbourhood Safety Officers for their prompt action and stressed the importance of community vigilance. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour to the Public Emergency Call Centre at 021 480 7700 or 107 from a landline.
