Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld joined the Reds in 1999 as a relatively young stopper and would spend three seasons at Anfield.
His spell on Merseyside was the most successful of his career, particularly in 2001 when Liverpool lifted the UEFA Cup, League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FA Charity Shield within a year.
After leaving England, Westerveld signed with Real Sociedad, where he fondly remembers the impact of a young midfielder who would eventually shine at Liverpool and for the Spanish national team.
Xabi Alonso's Former Real Sociedad Teammate Reflects on His Talent
Westerveld reminisced about playing alongside Alonso during a season where Real Sociedad almost clinched the La Liga title. “You could see he was special, but I never thought he’d have the career he did,” he remarked. “At just 21, he played with the maturity of someone in their 30s, rarely had a bad game, and his passing was unbelievable.”
Alonso had a crucial year following that, although the team struggled in the 2003/04 season, finishing 15th in the league.
Ultimately, Liverpool secured Alonso's signature, bringing him to the Premier League, where he triumphed before moving to Real Madrid and later finishing his career at Bayern Munich, winning 17 major titles.
Alonso's managerial journey continues, with his recent triumph as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, going undefeated in the league and cup during the 2023/24 season. Current speculation surrounds a potential return to management at Anfield, with sources indicating he could be a leading candidate for the role.
