Gabriel Jesus Discusses Arsenal's Striker Competition After Champions League Win

Gabriel Jesus shared intriguing insights about fellow striker Viktor Gyokeres after Arsenal clinched a 3-1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan.

Jesus netted the first two goals for Arsenal, while Gyokeres sealed the win with a spectacular late strike, intensifying the competition for the starting striker position in Mikel Arteta’s lineup.

With their triumph, Arsenal achieved a club record by winning seven consecutive Champions League matches, securing 21 points and solidifying their place among the top two as the league phase concludes.

Selection Dilemma for Arteta Ahead of Manchester United Match

The £65m acquisition of Gyokeres from Sporting has placed considerable attention on him, especially in light of the injuries that initially guaranteed his spot in the squad. Jesus had been absent for nearly all of the 2025 season due to an ACL injury, but his return has injected renewed hope and scoring ability, leaving Arteta with a tough selection choice against Manchester United this Saturday.

Reflecting on his journey, Jesus commented on the pressure that comes with being a striker, saying, "To think about starting in this moment, everyone wants to start, to get minutes, to get chances, but now I understand the whole situation, I'm not a kid anymore, I'm 28. I understand football, how it works. I was so happy that Viktor came on and scored a goal. A striker without a goal is always difficult - I've been fighting with this my whole career. And I'm 100 per cent sure when Kai gets his chance, he will score."

Last season, Kai Havertz, the first-choice striker, found the net 15 times across 36 matches. Having been transitioned to a left midfielder role, he might look to reclaim his position in the lineup following inconsistent performances. Meanwhile, Gyokeres' joy after scoring could highlight the immense pressure he faces from both external expectations and teammates eager to take his place.
