Gavin Hunt has successfully guided Durban City to the final of the KZN Premier’s Cup.
His side orchestrated an impressive comeback to defeat AmaZulu at Umhlathuze Stadium on Sunday, earning their spot in the championship match.
Trevor Mokwena emerged as the star for Durban City, with the speedy forward proving a constant threat upfront, netting two crucial goals in the second half.
City will now face Richards Bay in the final later today at the same venue, after Richards Bay overcame Midlands Wonderous in their semifinal clash.
City started strong, with Liam de Kock, a new signing from Stellenbosch, opening the scoring in just the sixth minute for Hunt’s team.
However, AmaZulu, who have displayed good form in these pre-season matches, equalized just two minutes later. Ndlovu, known as “Mbhobho,” scored against his former loan club, sneaking ahead of the defender to head home from open play, highlighting a lapse in marking by City.
Usuthu then took the lead for the first time on the stroke of halftime through Athini Maqokolo, despite playing with a man down after Mlondi Mbanjwa was sent off.
Mokwena’s Double Secures Victory
The second half belonged to Mokwena. His first goal came from a searching pass by Saziso Magawana, which Mokwena calmly slotted past AmaZulu goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela. This was Mokwena’s second goal of the pre-season tournament, having scored the winner against Milford FC in a playoff match at the same venue on Saturday, after joining City from Hungry Lions.
Soon after, Usuthu had an excellent opportunity to re-establish their lead, but Minenhle Ngcobo dragged his shot wide when he should have done better.
However, a long punt upfield by City caused trouble for Usuthu goalkeeper Mzimela, who came off his line. Mokwena was quick to react, reaching the ball first. With Mzimela out of position, Mokwena coolly rolled the ball into the empty net for his second goal.
Despite AmaZulu’s attempts to get back into the game, Durban City, recently rebranded as “Manchester City,” held firm under the guidance of their experienced coach, Gavin Hunt, to secure their place in the final.
