Durban City coach Gavin Hunt believes his side is heading in the right direction as they continue to maintain their unbeaten home record.
City, who earned promotion at the end of last season after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship title, have yet to taste defeat at home.
All four of their losses this season — including the last two matches — have come away from home. They have fallen to Sekhukhune United, Mamelodi Sundowns, AmaZulu, and most recently Richards Bay in last weekend’s Carling Knockout quarter-finals in Richards Bay.
However, that home record will face a stern test when they host Kaizer Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in the Betway Premiership match on Friday.
Chiefs — Hunt’s former club — advanced to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages this past weekend after defeating AS Simba 3-1 on Saturday to seal a 3-1 aggregate victory.
“Of course,” Hunt said without hesitation when asked whether remaining unbeaten at home showed that his newly promoted side was heading in the right direction.
City currently sit fifth on the Betway Premiership table with 15 points from 10 matches — just one point behind fourth-placed Chiefs, who have a game in hand.
“For any newly promoted club, home form is the most important form,” Hunt continued.
“What you get away from home is a bonus. We won our first away game [against TS Galaxy] this season. I think we’ve played five or six away games — we’ve got five or six points, which is fantastic for a newly promoted team.
“It’s not easy — this league is tight. Anybody can beat anybody on the day. You guys [the media and the fans] all play your Betways, and you get your predictions wrong.
“It’s easier to predict overseas games than South African games. It’s very difficult here. I’ve said it before: if a team has a strong mentality and good attitude, it will go further than a team full of superstars.
“Obviously, we want to improve in certain areas of our play, but if our mentality is right, we’ll be fine.”
