Gcaba Advises Mbokazi: Keep Clear of Temptations as Career Soars

Former Orlando Pirates Defender Issues Warning to Rising Star Mbekezeli Mbokazi

Ayanda Gcaba, the ex-Orlando Pirates defender, has an important message for the emerging football talent Mbekezeli Mbokazi: steer clear of alcohol and ‘slay queens’ as he navigates his burgeoning career.

Mbokazi showcased impressive skills during recent Bafana Bafana fixtures, contributing to the team's victory over Lesotho and a draw against Nigeria in the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 19-year-old defender played a pivotal role, executing a critical tackle that thwarted CAF African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman from scoring against Nigeria.

Demonstrating confidence beyond his years, Mbokazi undertook an ambitious run from his own half, although his resulting shot did not challenge Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Gcaba, a four-time trophy winner with Pirates, including a prestigious treble in the 2011/12 season, underscored the importance of avoiding negative influences.

“For me, it’s hanging out with the wrong crowd,” Gcaba stated.

He cautioned that as Mbokazi gains recognition, he may encounter individuals who are more interested in the spotlight than his well-being, highlighting the need for discernment.

“Where he is, he will get people who will just enjoy being with you. They will enjoy the limelight because they will attract people, and there will be others who say, ‘I’m happy to see this person because I can be inspired; I wish I can be something like him in the future,’” he added.

Gcaba continued to emphasize his advice for the young player.

“There will be slay queens, alcohol, and outings—if he can avoid those things, he can go far. If you can manage those temptations, you'll play football stress-free. Some journalists can elevate you only to bring you down swiftly. Your social actions have consequences. Are you making the right choices? If not, it could haunt you and damage your reputation,” he warned.

Mbokazi's trajectory has been impressive since being promoted from the academy last March. Recently, he was appointed Pirates’ vice-captain, with Nkosinathi Sibisi assuming the captaincy from Innocent Maela.

After Sibisi picked up an injury early in the season, Mbokazi stepped in to lead the team to victory against Sundowns in the two-legged MTN8 semifinals. The Buccaneers are set to meet Stellenbosch in the MTN8 final at Mbombela Stadium this Saturday.

Gcaba, now 39 and also a holder of the MTN8 title with Pirates, stressed the importance of humility for Mbokazi as he becomes a role model for younger players in Pirates' development program.

“I wish he can be more level-headed,” expressed Gcaba. “He should not rush things or feel pressured. Any sound advice should be heeded; how he processes it is his responsibility. Captaining the team at such a young age is significant—for him and for those still developing. They see him as proof that hard work leads to opportunities,” he said.

“His journey serves as inspiration; he was diligent and committed to reach this level. He must maintain humility and continue to work hard for himself and his teammates.”
