In the vibrant tapestry of Southern hip-hop, few names shine as brightly as Dem Franchize Boyz. The iconic group, comprised of Parlae, Pimpin, Jizzal Man, and Buddie, has played a pivotal role in shaping the genre with classics like "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It" and "I Think They Like Me." But here’s a twist: they nearly had a chance at what became one of hip-hop’s biggest anthems.
Recent revelations from Parlae and Pimpin’ shed light on how Lil Wayne snagged “Lollipop,” a track that slipped right through their fingers! In an interview with Hip-Hop Wired, the duo shared their regrets over missing this golden opportunity.
Parlae recalls, "Franchize Boyz was Static Major’s favorite group; he wanted to do music with us. He came down for a weekend, linked up with Kadife, and called me to say, ‘Hey Lae, we’re at the studio—come through for a song!’” Unfortunately, Parlae was too involved in his current project and brushed off the invite.
Pimpin’ also took a moment to reflect on his own shortcomings, saying, "I was supposed to go to the studio after the club. Everyone kept saying, ‘You need to get in there!’ I admit, I f*cked up," he chuckled, acknowledging his missed shot at greatness.
The Legend of 'Lollipop'
During that very session, Lil Wayne made his entrance, sealing the deal for what would become a colossal hit. While it’s easy to speculate how Dem Franchize Boyz could have added their own flair to “Lollipop,” the triumph rightfully belongs to Weezy F. Baby. This track, produced by Jim Jonsin, soared to diamond status, selling a whopping 10 million units in the U.S. as certified by the RIAA.
After “Lollipop,” Wayne struck diamond again with “Love Me” featuring Drake and Future in September 2024, along with DJ Khaled’s “I’m The One.” But for now, the crown shines brightly on “Lollipop,” his standout single which remains an anthem of the hip-hop landscape.
