Hunt Expresses Interest in Chiefs' Morris but Moves on to New Talent

Durban City Coach Gavin Hunt Confirms Interest in Kaizer Chiefs' Tashreeq Morris

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt has revealed his interest in signing Kaizer Chiefs striker Tashreeq Morris, although the deal ultimately fell through. Consequently, Hunt has shifted his focus and signed Letsie Koapeng, who made an impressive debut for the club, scoring in a 2-0 victory over Siwelele FC at Chatsworth Stadium.

Hunt’s Attempt to Secure Morris

Morris, who previously played under Hunt at SuperSport United, was acquired by Chiefs but has yet to see any action this season. His chances of breaking into the lineup have diminished with the arrival of new strikers, including Flavio da Silva, Khanyisa Mayo, Etiosa Ighodaro, and Ethan Chislet.

“There was an interest, and they [Chiefs] stalled the deal,” Hunt commented after the match. “I opted for Letsie, who was available after leaving Orbit College, as we had to make a timely decision. Now that I've made my choice, the budget has been exhausted.”

Morris's contract with the Chiefs is scheduled to expire at the end of the season, leaving open the possibility of a future collaboration with Hunt. The striker's playing style, which emphasizes positioning in the box to receive crosses, aligns well with Hunt’s tactical framework—one that previously yielded three league titles with SuperSport and three trophies with Bidvest Wits.

Koapeng as a Fitting Alternative

Hunt asserted that Koapeng is an optimal fit for the team's current needs. “I’ve known him for about seven or eight years, since he was a child,” he remarked. “I understand his capabilities, and he can effectively hold the ball in critical areas, which is essential for us.”

Reflecting on the team's challenges, Hunt noted a lack of a true number nine, which he designates as a significant issue. He referenced veteran striker Bradley Grobler, who scored against Chiefs recently. “As I’ve always said, having Bradley Grobler would have secured us a few more victories. You require that kind of player,” Hunt stated. He acknowledged that while Koapeng may not be a prolific scorer, he plays a vital role in supporting the younger players on the squad.
