The anticipated adventure game Hytale has finally launched in early access, marking a remarkable turnaround from its turbulent development history. Here's a brief overview of Hytale's journey from cancellation to revival, culminating in its release on January 13.
What is Hytale?
Hytale offers an adventurous experience that combines sandbox freedom with RPG mechanics. Set in a procedurally generated universe, players can explore dungeons and interact with diverse creatures, all presented with charming Minecraft-inspired visuals.
The game made its early access debut on January 13, featuring essential systems such as exploration, combat, building, engaging minigames, and community-run servers, with plans for expansion over time.
Why Riot Canceled Hytale
Hypixel Games first began work on Hytale in 2015, with contributions from Minecraft enthusiasts on the Hypixel server. Riot Games later financed the development and acquired the studio. However, in June 2025, after years of development, Riot made the decision to cancel Hytale. But what led to this?
In a now-archived blog post from June 2025, Hypixel explained, "As our vision changed and the genre evolved, the expectations kept escalating." They addressed how the technical scope grew more complicated, leading to delays despite a significant game engine reboot, resulting in Hytale falling short of its goals.
Riot generously provided severance and resources to the team for their future careers, with Hypixel expressing gratitude for Riot's commitment to the well-being of their developers.
Hytale Returns
Typically, a game’s cancellation means the end for its development team, but Hytale and Hypixel's story took a different path.
In November 2025, Hypixel announced that they had secured the rights to Hytale. They recognized how much the community valued the game and felt compelled to act. Although they had stepped away from Hytale since 2020, its community remained dear to them.
The deal was made without full visibility of Hytale’s current state, presenting significant risks. However, Hypixel managed to negotiate the agreement, rehiring 30 developers and obtaining funding through a personal commitment from co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme and the original team, without involving outside investors.
Riot Celebrates Hytale's Early Access Launch
On the launch day, Riot expressed congratulations to the Hypixel team for finally bringing Hytale to the players, acknowledging the challenging path they’ve taken.
Hytale Is Out Now and Continues to Evolve
With Hytale now available in early access, players can purchase the Starter Edition for $20. It requires the use of the Hytale Launcher, and is not listed on popular platforms like Steam.
As an early access title, players should anticipate some incomplete features and minor bugs. The developers have noted that the demand has surpassed their estimates, indicating a somewhat chaotic launch week.
Since acquiring Hytale in November 2025, Hypixel has significantly improved the game, merging numerous development branches, fixing critical systems, and squashing thousands of bugs, while also integrating new features.
They have emphasized the current version is "rough and unfinished," but are excited to showcase its potential. Plans are in the works for additional features, including a narrative-rich Adventure Mode and various minigames.
Hypixel is also looking towards future console releases and evaluating a mobile version. While they acknowledge the advantages of releasing on a platform like Steam, they suggest they might ultimately choose not to go that route.
