Hytale Launches Exclusively: Steam Release Still Uncertain

After a decade of anticipation, Hytale is finally here; however, it’s not available on Steam. The developer, Hypixel, opted to launch the game exclusively through its own platform, prompting questions about potential future releases on Steam.

Decision Behind Not Using Steam

Patrick Derbic, the executive producer, explained in a recent FAQ that the decision was intentional. By using its own launcher, the team aims to maintain a closer bond with its community and receive more informed feedback rather than facing a torrent of unfiltered impressions from new users.

Hypixel acknowledges the importance of constructive criticism and has held itself to high standards regarding the game's development. They believe that releasing through their platform will allow for a more tailored initial reception.

Steam Release: Possible but Uncertain

While Derbic cited Steam as a valuable marketing platform, he indicated that there are currently no plans to add Hytale to Steam. The studio feels that keeping the launch intimate with their community is priority, although the situation could change in the future.

Furthermore, Hypixel pointed out that not all of Hytale's modding capabilities are supported on Steam, suggesting that discussions with Valve may occur to explore options.

Despite not being available on consoles either, Hypixel assured players that a console version is planned for future release.

Benefits and Challenges of Bypassing Steam

Steam remains a premier platform for digital PC gaming, frequented by millions daily. By skipping Steam, Hypixel avoids paying related fees, although there may still be other costs associated with their launch.

Finding games on Steam can be challenging due to the sheer volume, yet smaller games often find success on the platform. Notably, Minecraft, which heavily inspired Hytale, also launched without Steam.

As other platforms like Epic Games Store and GOG attempt to challenge Steam's dominance, Hypixel's choice reflects a strategic approach in navigating the complex digital game landscape.
