India reclaimed the upper hand in the five-match T20 International series against South Africa with a commanding victory in the third game, winning by seven wickets after restricting the Proteas to a mere score at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
India won the toss and opted to bowl first due to the presence of dew.
South Africa made three changes from their previous lineup, bringing in Tristan Stubbs, Corbin Bosch, and Anrich Nortje, replacing David Miller, Lutho Sipamla, and George Linde.
Without a recognized spin bowler, South Africa relied on Donovan Ferreira and Aiden Markram, guided by a pace attack consisting of Nortje, Bosch, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman, and Marco Jansen.
India’s bowling attack proved too much for South Africa, who lost three wickets in just as many overs, leaving them at 7/3 after the dismissal of Dewald Brevis followed the earlier exits of Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock.
With Stubbs and Bosch contributing only 13 runs between them, the Proteas staggered to 44 runs at the loss of five wickets by the halfway point.
Hardik Pandya made history, becoming the fourth player in T20I cricket to achieve 100 sixes and 100 wickets, taking the wicket of Stubbs, who edged the ball to wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma.
A brief revival by Markram and Ferreira saw them add 25 runs in just under three overs before Varun Chakravarthy bowled Ferreira, leaving South Africa struggling at 69/6.
Varun continued to dominate, dismissing Jansen in similar fashion, while Markram managed to bring some stability to the innings with a gritty fifty, scoring 61 off 46 balls before being dismissed caught by Jitesh Sharma.
South Africa's innings concluded at just 117 all out, with Kuldeep Yadav cleaning up the tail. India was left needing only 118 runs to claim victory.
Arshdeep Singh made a significant comeback with impressive figures of 2/13 in four overs, while Chakravarthy supported well with 2/11, as India maintained disciplined bowling without any no-balls or wides throughout the innings.
In stark contrast to South Africa's performance, India began their chase aggressively, scoring 16 runs off Ngidi’s opening over. Abishek Sharma set the tone, hitting two sixes before being caught for 35 off 18 balls.
While South Africa struggled to score 25 runs during their powerplay, India surged ahead with 68 runs, hitting more boundaries in the first six overs than South Africa managed in their entire innings.
By the ten-over mark, India had doubled South Africa’s score, leading 88/1 compared to the Proteas’ 44/4.
Shubman Gill had the opportunity to gain form, contributing 28 runs before being bowled by Jansen, while Suryakumar Yadav scored just 12 before falling to a catch by Baartman.
Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube sealed the victory for India, finishing the match with 25 balls to spare.
The results have shown a clear disparity in performance between the two teams thus far. South Africa will need to address their inconsistent play promptly if they hope to stay in the series, with the next T20 International match scheduled in Lucknow on Wednesday.
