Almost every rap fan in the world knows how remarkable J. Cole is as a writer. But for anyone still in doubt, he’s just raised the bar with his latest release. The North Carolina artist has dropped the lead single from his highly anticipated album, The Fall-Off, titled "Disc 2 Track 2."
Currently available on YouTube and his social media accounts, this nearly four-minute song takes listeners on a powerful journey told in reverse. Paying homage to one of his inspirations, Nas, who has a similar song structure in "Rewind," Cole starts his narrative from a deeply poignant place: his own casket.
"My life, I see it in reverse, I first appeared in a hearse, the driver steered to the church / My grandkids carried the coffin to the altar as they burst into tears from their shirts / The tears rise to the sides of their face and into their eyes, it's piercin' with hurt."
As the track unfolds, Cole reflects on the myriad of experiences that have shaped his life—from the struggles in the music industry to the joy of marriage—all conveyed with raw, emotional intensity.
When Is J. Cole's The Fall-Off Dropping?
The accompanying music video is equally mesmerizing. Directed by Ryan Doubiago, it visually narrates Cole's life stages, aligning perfectly with his evocative lyrics.
With the hype surrounding The Fall-Off building for several years, fans are eagerly awaiting its full release on February 6. It's poised to be a dense and rewarding listening experience, especially since the title of the lead single hints at a double album.
However, the mystery of its tracklist remains, leaving us all to wait in anticipation for the album's debut.
