Joe Cole enjoyed a successful club career, but for many fans, it's his goal against Sweden at the World Cup 2006 that remains etched in memory.
Cole always had the talent for the spectacular. After moving from West Ham United to Chelsea, he scored crucial Premier League goals for a dominant team, but his World Cup stunner for England stands out above all.
"During my career, I was sometimes called a luxury player, and we’ve used that phrase as the title of my new book," Cole explains. "It’s a phrase that has both positive and negative connotations.

"Sometimes being a luxury player is good – everyone wants to be a Matt Le Tissier rather than a hod carrier. However, many often focused on my weaknesses.
"I battled against this perception throughout my career, even when it came to dealing with Sven-Goran Eriksson and the England team.
"One day, I was out in London enjoying lunch when I decided to contact one of the secretaries at the FA’s headquarters in Soho Square.
"I asked, 'Is Sven there?' When they confirmed he was available, I requested to meet him. I was intrigued by the idea of direct communication with the manager, and it’s something I would implement if I were ever to become a manager myself.
"So, I went to see him. I felt I was the most capable player to take the left midfield spot, but he had favored Kieron Dyer, Alan Thompson, and Emile Heskey in that role.
"I expressed, 'Every time I play for England, I perform well. Why am I not starting?' Sven provided feedback on the areas I needed to improve and we shared a cup of tea. I enjoyed my time with him, and after shaking hands, six months later, I was in the starting lineup. Up until the end of his tenure, I was his go-to player.
Cole concluded his international career in 2010 with 56 caps and 10 goals, a commendable achievement. He was one of Eriksson's solutions to a long-standing concern in the squad and played a pivotal role for the England manager.
Eriksson departed the England job in 2006 after five years, later managing teams like Manchester City and Leicester City, as well as national sides such as Mexico and Ivory Coast. The football community paid tribute to him following his passing in 2024.
