Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze says he is determined to capitalise on the team’s growing momentum after their impressive display that secured progression to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages over the weekend.
Kaze watched as Chiefs dismantled AS Simba in the second leg of the preliminary round at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday, producing one of their best performances of the season.
However, inconsistency has long been the club’s Achilles’ heel. The weekend’s victory was only their second win in their last nine matches across all competitions.
“I’m very optimistic because we know what we have to do,” said Kaze.
“In football, you have to score goals, especially when you create so many chances. We’re going to build on the momentum from this performance. It wasn’t just about the goals — the overall performance was very good.
“Most of the time, it’s up to us to reinforce that and keep the momentum alive.”
The true test of that momentum will come on Friday when Chiefs face Durban City in a Betway Premiership clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Reaching the group stages of the Confederation Cup will also give Chiefs an opportunity to rotate the squad and hand game time to players who have had limited chances this season.
Asanele Velebayi, whose move from Cape Town Spurs was delayed due to transfer complications, was finally given a chance to showcase his talent over the weekend.
Lebohang Maboe, a new signing from Mamelodi Sundowns, made his long-awaited debut, while Etiosa Ighodaro impressed in his second appearance, scoring the opening goal against the Congolese side. These developments mark positive signs for Amakhosi as they look to build a stronger and more balanced squad for future challenges.
“I believe every player will have a role to play this season,” said the Burundian-born coach.
“Not only in the CAF games but also in the league and the Nedbank Cup. We need everyone to contribute, especially the experienced players who have played in continental competitions.
“As you mentioned — Maboe, Gaston Sirino, Nkosi Ngcobo, Inácio Miguel, Zitha Kwinika — many of them will be key.
“You can’t reach the group stages without having a strong and united group, and we’re confident everyone will play their part.”
