Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has taken full responsibility for the damaging Soweto Derby defeat to bitter rivals Orlando Pirates, admitting that the club’s supporters deserved better.
Pirates thrashed Chiefs 3–0 at a packed FNB Stadium on Saturday to move to the top of the Betway Premiership table. This particular match, often described as one of the most fiercely contested fixtures in South African football, showcased the thrill and heartbreak that can encapsulate the beautiful game.
As the pulsating atmosphere filled the historic stadium, the disappointment for Chiefs supporters was palpable. Despite the extensive preparations from Kaze and his coaching staff, the execution on the pitch fell dreadfully short.
“First of all, I would like, on behalf of the club, to apologise to the fans,”said a dejected Kaze after the match. His sincerity reflected the intense emotions that surrounded one of the league’s biggest rivalries.
“Because they deserved better today and we were not up to the task. We have to acknowledge that.”
The Buccaneers' performance was nothing short of dominant. They not only secured their victory but could have increased their lead as they continuously pressured Chiefs throughout the match. This victory pushed Pirates to the top of the league standings, now three points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns with 41 points from 18 matches. However, the race is still tight, with Sundowns capable of reclaiming the top spot if they secure a victory in their upcoming match against Sekhukhune United.
In reflecting on the match, Kaze noted the crucial importance of the first moments of play, stating,
“This game emphasised the importance of the first 15 minutes — we needed to be on the front foot, to be alive, to be active.”Regrettably for Chiefs, they found themselves on the back foot almost immediately as they conceded from a short corner kick, illustrating a lapse in concentration that Kaze and his squad had hoped to avoid.
A substantial blow struck the Chiefs camp just before the match began: star goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was sidelined due to a sudden case of appendicitis. Rushed to the hospital for an emergency procedure, he was unable to take a position in goal for his team, compelling the coaches to bring in Bruce Bvuma for his first game of the season. Kaze acknowledged the impact of this unexpected loss on his team's performance.
“Brandon has been sick over the last two days,”Kaze explained.
“He was rushed to hospital and had successful surgery yesterday. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
Bvuma’s introduction was a gamble, one that did not pay off. Not only was he tasked with facing one of the toughest rivalries in African football, but he also had the added pressure of a poor personal history in similar situations, having last featured against Pirates during the notorious Soweto Derby defeat in May of the previous year. In that encounter, a last-minute Panenka by Patrick Maswanganyi had sealed a 2–1 loss for Chiefs.
Despite Bvuma’s commendable effort during the match, Kaze acknowledged that,
“It was a very big loss the day before a Derby like this — to lose your captain and your goalkeeper. But Bvuma made some good saves, even though it was his first game. I think he should have been helped more.”The pressing tempo and aggressive style of play demonstrated by Orlando Pirates put immense pressure on the young goalkeeper, making his task even more monumental.
This match was particularly significant as it marked the first time Chiefs have lost a Soweto Derby by a staggering 3–0 margin since the MTN8 semi-final in October 2020. For die-hard Chiefs fans, the painful memories of the past resurfaced, bringing a sense of déjà vu to the humiliation of such defeats. Historically, this was also their first league defeat by that margin since 2001, a match that saw the late Lesley Manyathela scoring twice along with Benedict Vilakazi adding to the scorecard.
Following the game, social media exploded with reactions from fans and analysts alike. Many expressed their discontent and frustration over the team’s lack of performance. Disappointment echoed across platforms as fans took to Twitter and Facebook to voice their sentiments.
“This was supposed to be an opportunity to show strength and resilience! What happened?”lamented one fan, highlighting the disappointment that their hopes for a competitive edge would fizzle out.
Others acknowledged the challenging circumstances around goalkeeper Petersen's absence.
“Tough loss, but let’s not forget what Petersen’s injury did to our game plan,”one supporter commented, recognizing the hurdles the team faced throughout the game. Plenty of critical comments accompanied the acknowledgment of the situation, demonstrating the passionate investment fans have in their club and the deep ties shared with their team.
As Chiefs strive to recover from the setback, all eyes will focus on their upcoming fixtures, where they must adjust and bounce back in front of their loyal supporters. Kaze, along with his co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef, will undoubtedly be faced with the tough task of rebuilding the team’s morale and tactics after such a heavy defeat. With the team’s future at stake, the pressure mounts as they delve into the next phase of the season, wrestling with both results and the reactions of their fervent fanbase.
In the broader realm of South African football, this match serves as a critical reminder of the competitiveness within the league, underlined by the passionate rivalries between clubs, and the stakes that are always present. Fans will be watching closely to see how Chiefs respond, not just for the remainder of the season but for the legacy of their club and the pride that comes with wearing the famous gold and black colors.
