Siya Kolisi to Celebrate 100 Test Caps Amidst Team Aspirations
Siya Kolisi expressed his excitement about becoming the ninth player in Springbok history to achieve 100 Test caps. While acknowledging the various role players throughout his journey, Kolisi emphasized the importance of a strong team performance to mark this significant milestone.
This landmark event for Kolisi coincides with another significant achievement, as Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will oversee his 50th Test match as head coach during the upcoming match at Stade de France.
Prior to the match, Kolisi stated, “It’s been a relaxed week. If we were at home, I think it would have been a little different. Our main focus is on what we can achieve as a team.”
Reflecting on his support system, Kolisi shared, “I’m fortunate to have my children present and the support of those who have helped me throughout my career. The team’s success will make this milestone even more special.”
Kolisi expressed gratitude for the community that has shaped him, stating, “I owe my journey to Zwide and the people who have guided me throughout my life, including my teachers and coaches.”
He recognized the impact of his coaches, saying, “Coach Rassie played a critical role in my early career, as did all my previous coaches. They believed in me when it mattered most.”
Kolisi also acknowledged the influence of his teammates, saying, “I carry the support of my teammates and the South African public in every match I play. Wearing the Springbok jersey 100 times is a tremendous honor.”
Looking ahead to the match against France, Kolisi expects an intense battle, recalling that their previous encounter in the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarterfinal ended in a narrow 29-28 victory for the Springboks. He stated, “This is a crucial game for us; it feels like a knockout match.”
“Winning this match is essential for us to maintain our top ranking and secure a favorable position for the World Cup draw,” Kolisi added. “Our goal is to represent our nation and secure a victory for Coach Rassie.”
Kolisi outlined the importance of physicality in the match, noting, “The confrontations in the scrums and lineouts will be vital, as will capitalizing on our opportunities.”
Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick echoed Kolisi’s sentiments, indicating the need for the team to perform at their highest level. Stick remarked, “Romain Ntamack is a world-class player who can exploit any opportunities we give him.”
“We must ensure that we remain focused and disciplined to withstand the French team's fast-paced style of play, which poses a significant challenge,” he added. “We have the right squad to meet that challenge.”
