The KwaZulu-Natal government has formally endorsed Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for a second term as the province’s police commissioner as his current tenure approaches its conclusion in March 2026.

In a show of confidence, Premier Thami Ntuli praised Mkhwanazi’s leadership and crime-fighting record, emphasizing that the provincial government stands behind him wholeheartedly.

Premier Ntuli Voices Support for Mkhwanazi

“Ultimately, the decision will rest with him, but from my side, and on behalf of the people of KwaZulu-Natal, we are satisfied with the work he has done,” said Ntuli. “We are pleased with the efforts of the police under his command.”

This governmental endorsement comes in light of recent discussions between the KwaZulu-Natal leadership and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, highlighting the urgency for continuity in provincial policing.

While it's still uncertain whether Mkhwanazi will accept another term, this backing places him in a strong position to lead the police force beyond March.

Mkhwanazi's Rising Popularity

Mkhwanazi’s standing with the public was visibly evident during a recent visit to the Durban beachfront. Crowds enthusiastically chanted his name, showcasing his widespread support. At the media briefing, he acknowledged the hard work of the KwaZulu-Natal police during the festive season and their ongoing commitment to enhancing public safety. He emphasized, “The safety of residents, citizens, and visitors remains our top priority.”

A Tough Stance Against Corruption

Since taking office, Mkhwanazi has cultivated a reputation for his uncompromising approach to crime and internal discipline. His leadership faced intense scrutiny in 2025 when he publicly raised alarming allegations of corruption and political meddling within the South African Police Service. These remarks catalyzed the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and parliamentary investigations into the claims, with Mkhwanazi cautioning that South Africa's criminal justice system was on the brink of “total collapse.”

Commissioner Remains Resolute

As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on Mkhwanazi and the future of KZN policing, with his steadfast commitment to combating crime and corruption resonating across the province.
