It wasn't Larian's choice to not release Baldur's Gate 3 on Switch 2.
This information came from studio head Swen Vincke during an AMA hosted by Larian on Reddit last week.
When asked about the potential release of the critically acclaimed and award-winning game on Switch 2, Vincke responded, "We would have loved to but it wasn't our decision to make." This comment led to a wave of disappointment from the community, with reactions like "super bummed by this decision especially if you wanted to do it but somehow were not green lit by [the] publisher…" and "I'm shattered to read this news".
Although Vincke did not elaborate further on the decision, speculation suggests that it may be due to licensing issues.
While it seems Baldur's Gate 3 will not be appearing on Switch 2 anytime soon, there is a glimmer of hope for Larian's next game, Divinity, which may release on the hybrid console. Vincke noted that Larian had recently released Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Nintendo's latest console, expressing, "We love the platform." He assured the community that Larian would keep the Switch 2 in mind for Divinity, which was announced during The Game Awards last month accompanied by a chilling trailer.
Additionally, Larian's technical director mentioned that the team is eager to ensure Divinity is playable on Steam Deck upon release. He highlighted that Baldur's Gate 3 was among the most played games on the Steam Deck, and they will strive to bring Divinity to that platform as well.
