Liverpool and Egypt star Mohamed Salah will soon return from the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and coach Arne Slot has given insight into his absence.
Salah is missing from Liverpool’s Premier League fixture against Burnley on Saturday, marking the seventh game he will not play due to his international commitments this month and last.
The Egypt captain is in Morocco for the AFCON 2025 as his team advances to the semi-finals. The Pharaohs faced a defeat to Senegal on Wednesday but are set to compete against Nigeria for third place in Casablanca on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool Will Play Without Salah for the Seventh Match in a Row
Salah’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations was halted by former teammate Sadio Mane, who scored a decisive second-half goal for Senegal, initiating a confrontation between the teams following a foul from Salah.
Egypt's conservative tactics contributed to their loss, allowing Senegal to dominate the game.
Slot expressed enthusiasm for the return of the 33-year-old forward, who is often regarded as one of the greatest African footballers. He confirmed that he and Salah have been in contact during the player’s absence.
“First of all, [Salah] plays a big game for Egypt on Saturday and then he comes back. I am happy he is coming back,” Slot shared with reporters in his pre-match conference.
“Mo has been so important for this club and for me, so I am looking forward to seeing him again. Even if I had 15 attackers, I would still be eager to see Mo back, but that's not our current situation. I am glad to have him back after an important match tomorrow.”
Slot confirmed that discussions regarding Salah's return to action have taken place, indicating he could feature as soon as next Wednesday when Liverpool plays their final away match of the league phase in the Champions League.
Salah's tenure in the Africa Cup of Nations followed remarks he made regarding being left out of the team, reigniting speculations about a potential move to play in the Saudi Pro League after his national duties.
Slot’s excitement reflects a desire for harmony, and it is evident that Salah will be welcomed back with open arms and be in contention to start for Liverpool as soon as he’s available in Merseyside.
While the Reds will face Burnley at Anfield without their star player, the mood remains optimistic.
