Liverpool is preparing for a first-team sale this month, despite currently being on an unbeaten run in the Premier League. However, the team sits fourth, trailing 14 points behind the league leaders as they aim to defend their title without having made moves in the winter transfer window yet.
Even after a significant summer investment exceeding £400 million, expectations were high for further strengthening during the winter. However, possibilities are pointing towards an exit instead.
Liverpool Set to Let Go of Star This Month
With Liverpool having upgraded their attacking and defensive options recently, the spotlight turns to their center-back situation. David Ornstein has mentioned that contracts for key players Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, set to expire in 2027, haven’t seen progress in negotiations with fellow defender Ibrahima Konate.
Ornstein also noted that Mohamed Salah will remain at the club this month despite some issues with management that surfaced in December. However, speculation arises regarding another first-team player potentially heading out.
Italian reports indicate that Federico Chiesa may be on the move, reportedly willing to take a wage cut to return to Juventus. Maurizio Romei, president of Chiesa’s first club, has commented on the situation, stating the player has yet to receive the playing time he deserves in Liverpool.
Romei remarked, “I hoped he’d get a lot more playing time, especially because English football suits him well. However, he hasn’t been utilized much despite performing exceptionally when given the chance.”
“Liverpool have the right forwards, starting with Salah. I don’t really understand it. Chiesa hasn’t made any enemies, quite the opposite: you saw the hugs when he scored.”
Chiesa made history by becoming the second Italian to win the Premier League after Mario Balotelli in 2012 and started the current season strong with a goal against Bournemouth. Unfortunately, he has found it challenging to secure starting positions, with Jeremie Frimpong often filling in during Salah's absence.
Chiesa is valued at €18 million, according to Transfermarkt. Liverpool will host Burnley at Anfield this weekend as the Premier League continues.
