Liverpool has made significant moves in the summer transfer window, aiming to strengthen Arne Slot’s title-winning squad with key signings.
One such signing was Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, a process that turned out to be straightforward as Liverpool met the fee and Isak's desire to join the Reds was unwavering.
However, not all transfers went as smoothly. The club encountered stiff competition for other targets, with one such case involving another European powerhouse with a notable edge over Liverpool.
Bayern Munich Usually Lands Their Targets – Not This Time
For decades, Bayern Munich has been synonymous with signing German talents, and Florian Wirtz was expected to follow that path. Surprisingly, he passed on Bayern and chose to play in the Premier League, much to the astonishment of many in Germany who anticipated a different outcome.
Wirtz made quite an impression at Bayer Leverkusen, where he celebrated winning the Bundesliga with Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten squad during the 2023/24 season alongside another Liverpool recruit, Jeremie Frimpong.
Robert Andrich, an experienced midfielder on the same team, revealed that he tried to convince Wirtz to join Liverpool instead of facing them.
“I wanted [the move abroad] and I told the Bayern boys that too,” said Andrich. “I’m happy for him that he took the step. I wouldn’t have thought that he would dare to take the step abroad.”
This decision was quite unconventional for a 22-year-old German player. Wirtz was among the most sought-after talents during the summer window, and the allure of remaining in Germany with a club capable of competing deep in the Champions League was undoubtedly appealing.
As a young talent already recognized at the national level, Wirtz is precisely the type of player Bayern Munich typically acquires, leading to surprise when he chose to join Liverpool instead.
Wirtz contributed significantly to Leverkusen's historic unbeaten Bundesliga season, helping secure the league title and also winning the DFB-Pokal.
Despite a rocky start at Liverpool, hindered by the team's inconsistent form, Wirtz has started 16 of the Reds' last 21 Premier League matches, beginning to find his rhythm with standout performances and a few league goals.
