Former Mamelodi Sundowns Striker Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s Stunning Goal Nominated for FIFA Puskás Award 2025

Costa, who departed Sundowns in the off-season claiming the club hindered transfer opportunities, showcased his skill during the FIFA Club World Cup group stages. He picked up the ball just inside the center circle, evading multiple Dortmund defenders before executing a powerful left-footed strike that found the back of the net, beating goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

While Sundowns did not progress to the knockout rounds, Costa’s exceptional goal was honored as the Goal of the Tournament.

At 27, Costa is now a player for Cultural Leonesa in Spain’s Segunda División and is among 11 players nominated for the esteemed award. He is in competition with prominent names such as Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Arsenal's Declan Rice, whose impressive strike against Real Madrid in last season's UEFA Champions League also received a nomination.

The Puskás Award winner will be chosen through an amalgamation of fan and expert votes, ultimately deciding who will claim this prestigious men’s honor.

Voting commenced today on FIFA's designated platform and will conclude on 3 December 2025.
