Mabasa Embraces Bench Role, Shines as Impact Sub for Pirates

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has revealed he holds no resentment towards coach Abdelsam Ouaddou for being left on the bench during the MTN8 final.

Mabasa, who came on as a substitute to score the second goal in Pirates’ 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, stated that he understands the nature of football, where only 11 players can start.

The Super-Sub Impact

Mabasa’s game-changing performance is becoming a familiar sight. In last season’s MTN8 final, he also came off the bench to score against the same Stellenbosch side, helping Pirates to a 3-1 victory.

His role as an impact sub was also evident in previous finals, including the Nedbank Cup final loss to Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns win in the 2023/24 season.

In both of those matches, Evidence Makgopa started ahead of him, highlighting the competition for places within the team.

“It’s not only this game, but it also happens in previous finals, for example, in big matches, where players have come off the bench and have had an impact,” Mabasa said.

“We really have a good squad depth; everyone is working hard in training. Honestly, if it was possible, everyone would play at the same time. But unfortunately, football only allows 11 players on the field to play, and everyone else has to be ready.”

Mabasa credited the team’s unity for their success. “Like I said, the unity within the group and the support that we have for one another, we continue to push one another. Regardless of who plays, everyone gives one hundred percent.”

The other two goals were scored by Tshepang Moremi, who, like Mabasa, came off the bench to star in extra time. Moremi, a former AmaZulu forward, was involved in all three goals, earning the Man of the Match award for his efforts.
