TS Galaxy forward Seluleko Mahlambi credits his brother Phakamani for his success.
Despite their challenging upbringing, Mahlambi attributes his belief in reaching professional football to Phakamani.
Phakamani, once considered one of South Africa's top football prospects, last played professionally in September 2021.
He made his debut under Gavin Hunt at Bidvest Wits, later joining Al Ahly SC in Egypt after impressive performances.
However, after an unsuccessful stint in Cairo, he returned to South Africa and joined Mamelodi Sundowns, who loaned him to Chippa United in the 2021/22 season.
Sadly, a severe Achilles tendon injury curtailed his playing career, marking the end of his professional football journey.
In August, Hunt offered him an opportunity to train with newly promoted Durban City, but he failed to secure a contract.
“Firstly, he is the person who made me believe that I can play football and reach the professional level, because where we come from, opportunities of making it are scarce,” Mahlambi stated.
“Seeing his breakthrough from the situation we come from made me see that if I work hard, it can happen the way I want it to.
“I can say that with how things worked out for him, they changed for me to do better in my career.”
Mahlambi is anticipated to make an impact as Galaxy prepares to face Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout quarterfinals at King Zwelithini Stadium this Sunday.
