The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is undergoing a significant transformation. Party president Jacob Zuma has initiated a leadership reshuffle that has seen crucial roles being replaced, stirring intrigue and speculation within political circles.

In a bold move, Zuma has axed Colleen Makhubele from her role as the Chief Whip of Parliament, appointing a temporary successor as the party continues to navigate its turbulent waters. Former Transnet executive Brian Molefe has been selected as the new Treasurer-General, stepping into the shoes of Mpiyakhe Limba.

Hard Choices for MK Party Leadership

On January 12, 2026, the party took to its @MkhontoweSizwex X account to share the developments, highlighting Zuma's decision to streamline leadership as a key strategy for navigating the party’s ongoing challenges.

“His proven track record, strategic capability, and deep understanding of complex financial systems render him suitably qualified to assume this critical responsibility at this phase of the party's growth,”

declared party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, emphasizing Molefe's extensive experience in governance and organizational leadership.

While the reason behind Limba's dismissal remains undisclosed, the party has expressed its gratitude for both him and Makhubele's contributions to the party. Notably, Vanessa Calvert, previously suspended from her role as Chief of Staff in the Parliamentary Caucus, has been reinstated.

Collen Makhubele's Turbulent Tenure

Makhubele, who started her stint as chief whip in May 2025, faced immediate challenges, with discontent brewing among party members over her leadership style. Accusations of poor judgment and alienation were leveled against her, culminating in reports of her controversial attempts to secure a contract for her husband’s business.

Though she initially faced removal in late 2025, she vehemently denied any wrongdoing regarding the R180,000 contract scandal. Despite her efforts, the internal party pressures proved too overwhelming.

A Shocking Departure: Duduzile Zuma

In another notable incident, Duduzile Zuma has stepped down as an MP following allegations that she attempted to recruit young men to fight in the Ukraine conflict. She has refuted these claims, insisting she was misled.

This series of upheavals within the MK Party emphasizes the volatile nature of political leadership amid evolving circumstances. Stakeholders are left to wonder what the future holds amidst these changes.
