Last season’s Betway Premiership top assist provider, Keletso Makgalwa, shares his views on the ‘King of assists’ label amid Sekhukhune United’s great start to the 2025/26 season.
Makgalwa, who joined Babina Noko ahead of the 2024/25 season, had 15 goal contributions in his first season back in the top flight of South African football after his spell at Motsepe Foundation Championship club, Upington City.
Of Makgalwa’s 15 goal contributions, eleven were assists, which was the most in the league and significantly more than his tally of four goals.
The 28-year-old now finds himself labelled as the ‘King of assists.’
“I used to like scoring goals, and for me, I had to adjust somewhere to help my team also to score goals, you know, so I think I like assists more than goals,” said Makgalwa on his knack for getting assists.
The Limpopo-born attacker’s assist provision rate is a contrast to what those who followed his progress closely at the youth level and the early years of his professional career would’ve envisaged, as he was more often the one finishing off chances rather than laying them on a platter for others to do so.
The 28-year-old’s game evolution has continued into the 2025-26 season, with four assists in eight games thus far.
His and Sekhukhune’s form has caught the attention of fans and neutrals alike, as he narrowly missed out on the August Player of the Month award to TS Galaxy’s Puso Dithejane.
“For me, I think Puso [Dithejane] had a great month, you can’t take that away, and I also had a great month, but in terms of numbers, he was ahead of me, so I still need to work hard and hopefully I will win it away one day,” Makgalwa on Player of the Month award snub.
Makgalwa and Sekhukhune United will be hoping to continue their rich vein of form as they hope to maintain their momentum.
