Sekhukhune United Forward Keletso Makgalwa Discusses Club Performance and National Team Aspirations
Keletso Makgalwa, the 28-year-old forward for Sekhukhune United, recently opened up about the early-season form of his team, Babina Noko, which has earned him a spot in Hugo Broos' preliminary squad for next month's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Despite not having yet made a senior national team appearance for South Africa, Makgalwa has played in all of his side's matches this season.
“For me, it’s something that I’ve been praying about. When I saw my name on the preliminary squad, I was a little excited, and I even called my family. I feel that time has arrived,” said the former Mamelodi Sundowns player.
Last season, Makgalwa was nominated for the PSL Footballer of the Season award, and this year his team has had a strong start, accumulating 20 points from their first nine matches, temporarily placing them at the top of the log standings before falling to second after a loss to Polokwane City.
“We had a good preseason, and with the help of the coach and his technical team, we’ve been working very hard. We analyzed last season’s games and identified areas for improvement, which is helping us now,” he shared regarding his team's successful early season.
Makgalwa is one of four Sekhukhune players included in the 45-man Bafana Bafana preliminary squad, along with Renaldo Leaner, Vuyo Letlapa, and Siphesihle Mkhize.
“I need to work extra hard to make sure that I make it into the 23 (23-man squad),” Makgalwa emphasized.
It remains to be seen whether the former Upington City forward can lead his team to greater heights while pursuing his ambition of joining the national team.
Broos is expected to announce the final squad in the coming days.
