Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula discusses his journey back to peak performance.
Makhaula was named Midfielder of the 2024/25 season following a series of outstanding performances.
However, the 35-year-old suffered a long-term injury in the Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs, which sidelined him for much of the first round of the 2025/26 campaign.
He has since made his return and featured in several matches before the international break.
“I think it’s going to be a challenge,” said Makhaula.
“But I have my teammates, the medical team and the fitness trainers working hard to help me get back to that level. Playing regularly will help bring my confidence back.”
Makhaula also reflected on the impact of the injury, admitting it was a difficult period, but expressed his satisfaction at being back with the squad.
“It really affected me, I won’t lie,” he said.
“But I’m getting better every day, and I’m happy to be back in the squad for the remaining games. It’s always good to be back.”
Meanwhile, Makhaula and his Orlando Pirates teammates will face the Carling All Stars in the Carling Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium this Saturday.
