Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox expressed a desire to 'interfere' just four months before the club parted ways with manager Ruben Amorim on Monday.
Amorim, who held the managerial position for 14 months and led the team to the 2025 Europa League Final, was dismissed following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Leeds United that left the club in sixth place in the Premier League.
In the wake of Amorim's departure, Darren Fletcher has stepped in as interim manager, but recent comments from Wilcox raise questions about the decision-making process.
Manchester United Director Reflects on Coaching Impact in Amorim's Dismissal
Reports indicate a tense meeting occurred between Amorim and Wilcox on Friday, where Amorim was reportedly frustrated by Wilcox’s hesitance to invest in players who would suit his preferred 3-4-3 formation.
Wilcox suggested that a 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Boxing Day could serve as a model, while Amorim had opted for a back four in that match, achieving only their second clean sheet of the season.
Amorim stated after the Leeds game, “I came here to be the manager, not to be the coach. I was very clear on that. That will end in 18 months and then we all move on. That was the understanding.”
Quotes from Wilcox at a September 2025 dinner for former Manchester United players surfaced, revealing his struggle with leadership, saying, “I’m a coach at heart. Although I’m in a different role now, my instinct is to interfere.”
Wilcox, who enjoyed a playing career with teams like Blackburn Rovers, Leeds, and Leicester City before transitioning to coaching, had a stint as a technical director for Manchester United starting in 2024 before his recent promotion.
As Manchester United prepares to face Burnley this evening and hosts Brighton in the FA Cup Third Round on Sunday, the team's hopes for silverware this season hang in the balance.
