Two-time World Cup winner Mazalole Mapimpi is back as Vodacom United Rugby Championship action returns this week after a month-long international break, with the Hollywoodbets Sharks taking on Connacht in Galway, Ireland, on Saturday evening.
The veteran winger was handed a five-match suspension following a red card in October after a dangerous tackle on Ulster full-back Michael Lowry at Kings Park Stadium.
The incident meant Mapimpi was also ruled out for the Springboks year-end tour in Europe.
With the Springboks taking on Wales earlier on Saturday, the Hollywoodbets Sharks have had to manage without most of their internationals, although the bench is enhanced by the inclusion of Grant Williams, who has been released from national duty. Additionally, Suzuki Griquas stalwart George Whitehead joins the lineup at flyhalf for this match.
Captain Vincent Tshituka expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge, stating, “We’ve been able to prepare well for this challenge against Connacht. The guys have put in a lot of hard work and there’s been a good, positive vibe going into this game.
“The past few weeks have focused on team connection. It’s been a tough start to the season, not one we wanted, but to build back we need to work together and put in the effort, which we’ve done. We hope to see good results from that.”
“Team connection has been crucial for us recently, bonding both on and off the field, as individuals. It’s proving effective, and the guys are in a strong mental space.”
Regarding the upcoming opponent, he acknowledged, “Connacht is a quality side and extremely tough to beat, particularly at home. Even though they haven’t started the season as they wished, we recognize their quality. That could motivate them to ignite their season, and we know the challenge ahead.”
“However, we’ve prepared thoroughly over the last few weeks and aim to present a solid strategy against them. As a team, we’re eager for the challenge.”
Kick-off on Saturday is at 9.45pm (SA Time).
