Maritzburg Shocks Richards Bay to Reach Premier’s Cup Final

Maritzburg United upset favourites Richards Bay to advance to the KZN Premier’s Cup final after a long-drawn penalty shootout at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Regional Stadium on Saturday.

The match ended goalless after 90 minutes, leading directly to a penalty shootout. Maritzburg emerged victorious with a 6-5 win.

Maritzburg will now face the winner of the second semifinal between Royal AM and AmaZulu, which is set to take place shortly.

Yanela Mbuthuma had a chance to win the shootout for Richards Bay but Maritzburg goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi, named man of the match, saved the penalty. The shootout then went to sudden death.

Salim Magoola saved a penalty in favour of Bay, giving them another chance to win. However, newly signed striker Thabang Sibanyoni’s penalty was also saved by Msibi. Maritzburg capitalized on their subsequent attempt to secure a 6-5 victory.

The final will be played at the same venue on Sunday at 3:00 PM, following the AmaZulu-Royal AM match.
