Durban City Coach Confirms Mashego's Ineligibility Against Mamelodi Sundowns
Mashego’s Absence Explained
Terrence Mashego, the newly loaned left-back for Durban City from Mamelodi Sundowns, will not feature in the upcoming Betway Premiership match at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Coach Gavin Hunt confirmed that the player is ineligible to play due to a clause in the loan agreement between the two clubs. Although Mashego contributed to a 2-0 victory against Siwelele at Chatsworth Stadium, he cannot participate in the clash with his parent club.
This restriction is common in football, where the parent club can prevent a player from competing against them while still covering their salary.
“Sadly, he can’t play against Sundowns. I don’t think so, no. Here you go,” Hunt stated.
Hunt’s Approach to the Match
As a four-time league-winning coach, Hunt is accustomed to navigating challenges. He is the last coach to secure a league title before Sundowns began their eight-year dominance in the 2016/17 season. Despite the absence of Mashego, Hunt is focused on the match ahead. He acknowledged that Sundowns, currently second on the table with 15 points from six matches, have faltered in terms of fluidity since the appointment of coach Miguel Cardoso in December.
“I don’t have any emotions on it,” Hunt remarked. “In football, I don’t have any emotions—win or lose. I try to set it up as best as I can… Of course, we will try our best. We will run and chase and have a plan… The reality on the pitch, we need to do certain things, and then they have got quality.”
Historically, the last time Durban City—previously Maritzburg United—defeated Sundowns away in league play was during the 2012/13 season, when Delron Buckley netted two goals at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
