You're going to spend an awful lot of time with your Fishing Rod in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, especially as selling fish is a great way to earn Bells quickly.
Don't forget, the Museum is always looking for new fishy donations - so if you're not after a few Bells, Blathers will take any new species you find! In short, in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Fishing Rods are very important.
On that note, here's how to get a Fishing Rod in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, plus how to get all Fishing Rod types and how to use a Fishing Rod.
How to get a Fishing Rod in New Horizons
There are multiple Fishing Rods you can get in New Horizons, but you can only craft three of these. They are the Flimsy Fishing Rod, the Fishing Rod, and the Golden Fishing Rod - the other variations of the Fishing Rod will need to be bought at Nook's Cranny.
The Flimsy Fishing Rod will last for 30 uses, while the Fishing Rod and its other color variations will last longer. However, if you're catching fish for C.J during the Fishing Tourney, they will not break.
Below you'll find exactly what materials you need to craft the Fishing Rods and their price at Nook's Cranny:
Flimsy Fishing Rod: 5 Tree Branch (400 Bells)
Fishing Rod: 1 Flimsy Fishing Rod, 1 Iron Nugget (N/A)
Golden Fishing Rod: 1 Fishing Rod, 1 Gold Nugget (N/A)
Colourful Fishing Rod: (2,500 Bells)
Fish Fishing Rod: (2,500 Bells)
Outdoorsy Fishing Rod: (2,500 Bells)
The Golden Fishing Rod is one of a few special tools; you'll unlock the ability to craft this after catching all Fish.
How to use a Fishing Rod in New Horizons
To use a Fishing Rod in New Horizons, you need to equip it from your pockets or your quick-tool menu. Then, walk to a body of water on your island. This can be a pond, a river, or the ocean. We recommend approaching the water slowly, as you can scare away any potential fish if you go too fast.
In the body of water, look for teardrop-shaped shadows. These are fish. Press 'A' to cast your line out and watch the float (the thing at the end of your line). If this is in front of or near a fish, they should eventually take the bait. Wait for the float to disappear underneath the water and press 'A' again quickly to reel your catch in.
