Mastering Fake Art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Fake art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is something you'll need to carefully navigate around if you want to fill out your Museum's Gallery.

Redd, as always, is on hand to provide you with the pieces you need (for a fee of course). However, be careful when buying off this particular Animal Crossing: New Horizons fox, for many of his pieces can be fake, and Blathers will not accept them! However, some fake pieces can actually be haunted art to help add that spooky feel to your home, if you want that...

Without further ado, here's how to spot all Animal Crossing: New Horizons fake art, the art that is never fake and what to do with fake art should you unfortunately buy some.

How to spot real and fake art in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Your first piece of art from Redd will always be genuine, and it's the ones you buy after this you need to be careful with.

After Redd gives you a false sense of security with your first purchase that lets you open the Gallery at the Museum, he'll then start showcasing fake pieces of art and statues among some genuine ones. Before you buy any piece of artwork you should inspect it when Redd gives you the option, this allows you to take a closer look and determine if you're about to be scammed.

Also, some pieces will always be real and do not have a fake version. Redd really knows how to keep you guessing.

There are a few things you should look out for to spot a fake piece of art:

  • Fake art will have an odd detail or two - Art in Animal Crossing is often based on real-world pieces; you can often compare the two to work out what's different but for some pieces it's tricky. Essentially, it's a high-stakes game of 'spot the difference', which will cost you a lot of Bells if you get it wrong.
  • Forgeries are different now - Fake art in New Horizons is different from previous games, so any knowledge you have from those cannot be applied here.
  • Fake art can be Haunted - These characteristics aren't always obvious but they can show themselves in Redd's Ship showroom before you buy them. Essentially, when displayed in your home, they can change later in the day; for example, the Wistful painting can open and shut their eyes - spooky.

Now you know that, it's time to figure out which versions are real and which are fake...
