Mastering the Megaphone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The Megaphone is an item specifically available in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

First introduced in the Nintendo 3DS entry, New Leaf, the Megaphone leverages the system’s microphone to help players locate villagers by calling out their names.

How to Acquire a Megaphone

To obtain a Megaphone, ensure your copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been updated to version 3.0. Since the Megaphone is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, having both the updated console and game is essential.

Visit Nook's Cranny and check the tools cabinet, where the Megaphone can be purchased for 3,500 bells.

Using the Megaphone

To utilize the Megaphone, select it from your inventory, hold it up, and press and hold the A button to bring it to your mouth. Speak clearly, and the Nintendo Switch 2 microphone will capture your voice.

When calling a villager, say their name directly. If done correctly, the villager will respond, with a dialogue box appearing on-screen showing their direction.

While a robust feature conceptually, many players have experienced issues with the Megaphone's reliability. It often misinterprets names or returns a 'No reply' message even when the villager is nearby.

To enhance performance, try speaking immediately after pressing the A button and vary your pronunciation based on specific villagers. For instance, using "Robert" instead of "Fro-bert" may work better for calling Frobert.

Additional Information About the Megaphone

The Megaphone also has various quirks and additional functions:

  • If the villager is already visible on-screen when you use the Megaphone, they will wave instead of responding verbally.
  • Besides villagers, the Megaphone can attract other outdoor characters, such as Resetti introduced in update 3.0.
  • Unlike some tools, the Megaphone cannot be customized by Reese.
  • The Megaphone is ineffective indoors and will give a feedback message if used in unsuitable outdoor areas, like Harv's Island.

Best of luck mastering the Megaphone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons!
