Mbokazi Salutes Teamwork After Pirates' Victory Over Siwelele

Orlando Pirates’ Mbekezeli Mbokazi Attributes Success to Team Effort

Orlando Pirates’ powerful defender, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, credits teamwork for the club’s narrow 1-0 victory over Siwelele in their latest Betway Premiership match at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday.

Mbokazi’s Defensive Prowess in Challenging Match

While Mbokazi was crucial in defense, he emphasized that it was the collective effort that enabled the Pirates to secure three points against their opponents. “If we couldn’t get a goal, we were determined to ensure that Siwelele couldn’t score either,” noted the Pirates vice-captain.

The tough defensive strategy proved effective as the Soweto Giants remained organized, avoiding any lapses even as tension mounted towards the end of the match.

Impactful Substitutes Propel Pirates to Victory

As the game progressed, Orlando Pirates’ substitutes played a vital role. Coach Abdelsam Ouaddou praised them as “impact players.” Oswin Appollis emerged as the match-winner in the 80th minute, capitalizing on a chance to find the back of the net against Siwelele goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.

This victory marked Pirates’ seventh consecutive win across all competitions and elevated them to 4th place in the Betway Premiership standings, amassing 12 points after six matches.

Mbokazi Celebrates Collective Achievement in Match Against Siwelele

In an interview with Pirates Media, Mbokazi acknowledged that his standout performance was the result of the synergy with his teammates. “I can’t play well without my teammates,” he stated, highlighting the importance of cohesive teamwork in defense.

He praised the tactical discipline exhibited by the backline and stressed that focusing on collective effort rather than individual accolades was crucial to their success.

Pirates’ Tactical Strategy Proves Effective

Mbokazi elaborated on the team’s strategic approach during the match, which revolved around working as a cohesive unit. “It was hard to get a goal,” he admitted. “But we played with long balls wide, and by going direct, we created the opportunity for Appollis to score.”

This tactical execution was instrumental in securing a vital win, bolstering the team's momentum.

Next Steps: Pirates Set Sights on CAF Champions League

Turning their focus to the future, Orlando Pirates are already gearing up for the second leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round against Lesotho’s Lioli FC. The team holds a strong position, having achieved a 3-0 victory in the first leg at Bloemfontein.

As they prepare to host Lioli at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, the Pirates aim to build on their impressive form and clinch a spot in the next round of this prestigious continental competition.
