Michael Carrick has already expressed strong support for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
Carrick, who is in line to become the interim head coach of the Red Devils, has a rich history with the club, having spent 12 years at Old Trafford and securing five Premier League titles along with the UEFA Champions League in 2008.
Mainoo, touted as United's next rising star in midfield, found himself sidelined under the previous manager Ruben Amorim. However, with Carrick's comments on the Stockport-born player, it seems a new chapter may begin.
Michael Carrick’s Endorsement of Kobbie Mainoo
After having represented England in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, Mainoo’s recent lack of playtime at Old Trafford has been a point of concern for fans. The team is in desperate need of a midfielder, yet Amorim neglected to include the academy product in his plans, citing his tactical setup.
Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte frequently filled the midfield roles under Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation, leaving Mainoo with little opportunity. However, Carrick's leadership may bring a hopeful change.
During Carrick’s tenure at Middlesbrough, he utilized a 4-2-3-1 formation in over 90% of matches, a system that is more favorable for Mainoo's playing style.
When asked if Manchester United should structure the team around their talented number 37, Carrick responded affirmatively, stating, "Yeah." He emphasized the importance of nurturing a player who has risen through the academy and understands the club's ethos. "There’s definitely a place for him there, for sure," Carrick confidently concluded.
