Recent rumors circulating on social media platforms like Bluesky and X suggested that Microsoft might cut tens of thousands of jobs due to the rising costs associated with artificial intelligence. However, the company's lead communications officer has come forward to deny these claims.
A report on TipRanks claimed that Microsoft was "considering massive layoffs" this month, potentially affecting between 11,000 and 22,000 positions within the Azure Cloud, Xbox, and global sales teams. The rumor gained traction, but Windows Central editor Jez Corden asserted that the news regarding Xbox was "false." Following this, Microsoft's Chief Communications Officer, Frank X. Shaw, who has been with the company for nearly 17 years, also dismissively addressed the speculation.
100 percent made up / speculative / wrong. — Frank X. Shaw (@fxshaw) January 7, 2026
There has been significant skepticism toward both Corden's and Shaw's statements, with Shaw responding actively to various comments. He indicated that he is also "eagerly awaiting" confirmation of the news he believes to be inaccurate.
While current reports suggest no immediate layoffs, it's essential to acknowledge that Microsoft has made significant cuts in the past. In early July 2025, the company laid off around 9,000 employees, a move Xbox head Phil Spencer described as necessary for ongoing success. These cuts led to several game cancellations and studio closures, aiming to "increase agility and effectiveness." Despite these layoffs, Microsoft achieved a remarkable valuation of $4 trillion by late July 2025.
